On June 12, 2016 at 2:02 AM, the LGBTQ+ community was changed forever. Many in our community had never faced violence. We had forgotten past attacks such as the UpStairs Lounge fire and the Otherside Lounge bombing. Many of the people who were enjoying Latin Night at Pulse weren’t aware of Transgender violence like we are today. 5 years ago, our innocence was stolen. Our safe space was violated. 5 years ago, 49 of our LGBTQ+ siblings were taken from us. Another 53 were shot but survived. This terrible tragedy showed us the darkness of society, but in the following days as the people of Orlando, the country, and the world came together, we learned that we do have allies. The Pulse Massacre was a turning point in so many of our lives, and as we approach the 5 year anniversary we remember the 49 victims and how our lives all changed.
