(VIDEO) A New Orleans Gay Bar Inferno Killed 32. Roy Reed Was First to Report the Truth.

The late journalist and New Orleans resident Roy Reed, who passed away in 2017, is perhaps best known for his enterprising Civil Rights-era coverage in The New York Times.  He wrote extensively about attacks on marginalized communities, like Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama.  On June 24, 1973 he received a call in the early morning from the New York Times Annex in New York City, asking him to report on a fire in New Orleans. This was the Up Stairs Lounge fire, a notorious arson attack on a gay bar that would claim 32 lives. His 700+ word, front-page story in The New York Times, entitled “Flash Fire in New Orleans Kills at Least Thirty-Two in Bar,” would be the only special report on the tragedy to inform the public of the bar’s “homosexual” clientele the next morning. Other major market publications ignored or obscured the reality that the destruction of the Up Stairs Lounge was an intentionally set blaze that killed gay men.

Nearly One in Four Gen Z Mormons Are LGBTQ+

In the largest study of Mormons ever conducted in the United States, nearly a quarter of Gen Z respondents said they identify as something other than heterosexual. A full 23% said they were lesbian, gay, bisexual, or other. On Tuesday, The Next Mormons author Jana Riess analyzed an extensive dataset from the national public opinion survey Nationscape for the faith-focused publication Religion News Service (RNS). Nationscape’s data included input from 3,881 self-identified members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the faith is formally known. Riess writes that this makes it one of the largest studies of Mormons ever conducted in the U.S.

Navajo Nation celebrates its first official Pride parade after a devastating year

When Navajo Nation Council Delegate Nathaniel Brown came out to his dad, he was terrified. But when Brown told him he was nádleehí, a third gender in Navajo culture, he was surprised by his father’s reaction. Brown said, “My father was telling me that I am born the way the Holy People made me” This year, Pride came as the Navajo Nation, which suffered some of the worst effects of the pandemic, leads the country in vaccinations. Cars adorned with gay and trans pride flags, signs reading “We are sacred” in Navajo, and rainbow streamers paraded from the Navajo Nation Museum through central Window Rock and to the Navajo Nation Council Chambers.

Caitlyn Jenner claims she’s the victim of transphobia and the whole world is like “Girl, stahp!”

Caitlyn Jenner railed against Jimmy Kimmel on Twitter recently, accusing the late night comedian of being transphobic after he compared her to Donald Trump. Unfortunately for her, nobody else seemed to see it that way. Quick backstory: At the beginning of the month, Kimmel cracked a joke about the California gubernatorial candidate’s widely panned appearance on The View, saying, “Are you sure that isn’t Donald Trump in a Caitlyn Jenner wig?” After Kimmel’s comment, Jenner wasted no time voicing her outrage on Twitter, writing: “Last night @jimmykimmel called me Donald Trump with a wig. He obviously believes that trans women are simply men with wigs on. Where is the outrage from the left or LGBT community? Being WOKE must be optional if you are a Democrat.”

(VIDEO) Breaking Queer News: Supreme Court Rules Catholic Group Doesn’t Have To Consider LGBTQ Foster Parents

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday sided with Catholic Social Services in a battle that pitted religious freedom against anti-discrimination laws in Philadelphia and across the country. The court declared that the private Catholic agency was entitled to renewal of its contract with the city for screening foster parents, even though the agency violated city law by refusing to consider married LGBT couples. The court’s decision marks a revolution in the law, for the first time declaring explicitly that anti-discrimination laws, at least those meant to protect the LGBT community, play second fiddle to religious views under the Constitution.

World’s largest Catholic school district votes to finally recognize Pride

This June, Pride flags will officially fly for the first time at Catholic schools in Toronto. After a marathon meeting Thursday night, a majority of Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) trustees voted in favor of recognizing Pride this year and flying the rainbow flag. The School Board published a statement saying “We recognize that this is an important step required to demonstrate the TCDSB’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive environments that are safe and welcoming places for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff.” At the meeting, all three proposals related to Pride month passed. That means rainbow flags will fly outside all TCDSB schools, as well as the board’s head office, throughout the month of June. The TCDSB is the largest publicly-funded Catholic school district in the world and encompasses more than 91,000 students at 196 schools. The decision comes after years of failed proposals and fraught debate over recognizing the annual celebration of LGBTQ2S+ identities.
