South Florida Gay News, one of South Florida’s most important LGBTQ+ news sources, reports on this exciting recurring event. Sensually aerobatic and sexually athletic, the performers of AirOtic amaze audiences. The show is an intimate celebration of the body and companionship developed by Stephane Haffner and his husband Kyle Kier. In an interview with SFGN Kier said, “The costumes, the choreography, the music is all very tongue in cheek, it’s super camp but also with a sensual undertone. It’s like 50 Shades of Grey meets Cirque du Soleil. Everything is done with class. It’s all about sensuality, physique, and the circus art that is behind it. Like the Crazy Horse in Paris, France. That kind of style with a modern twist.” Find out more about this amazing show by picking up a copy of South Florida Gay News, on stands today.

This past Saturday, the South Florida LGBTQ+ crowd celebrated FlockFest. What started as a few dozen friends hanging out at the beach in 2014 has turned into a massive gathering of locals and visitors as they party on the beach and raise funds for charity. This year the 600 VIP tickets quickly sold out, and beyond the VIP area the beach was filled with hundreds more revelers. Floats and rafts shaped like flamingos and other winged creatures covered the beach and the water, and even the rainy start to the day couldn’t stop the party.

Now we bring you this week’s cover story from South Florida Gay News. SFGN is one of South Florida’s most important news sources. Spanish police have arrested a fourth person in connection with the death of a 24-year-old gay man. Samuel Luiz was found unconscious at the weekend outside a nightclub in A Coruña, after being beaten. Emergency services failed to revive him and he died on Saturday morning. Friends and relatives of the victim say the nursing assistant was deliberately targeted for being gay and say his attackers used derogatory language during the beating. Samuel Luiz was reportedly attacked while on a video call, by suspects who believed he was trying to record them. His death came just days after the end of Pride week in Spain. On Thursday, Queer News Tonight reported that Bob Plominski and Mike Ferrari of Oakland Park had recieved notice that they were not allowed to fly their Pride flag. Bob Brosseau, president of the board of the Eastland Cove Homeowners Association, said someone had complained to the board about the rainbow flag, leaving it no choice but to enforce its rules against flying flags other than those the association allows. The couple has since displayed more rainbow flags on their property, and 11 of their neighbors have joined them in flying the rainbow flags at their homes.
On Saturday, June 19 Happening Out Television was live at Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride. Tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies were gathered to celebrate Juneteenth and one of the first Pride events in South Florida for 2 years. It was warm and sunny outside, perfect weather to celebrate, and the crowd was taking full advantage. As the day went on and it got closer to the 7 pm parade step-off time, the feelings of love and happiness that are hallmarks of Pride were almost palpable. Queer News Tonight was already streaming our LIVE parade pre-show coverage, and was preparing to begin the coverage of the parade. That was when we were alerted about an accident at the parade staging area that was going to cause the parade to be delayed. From our position at the Black Excellence Stage, we were far from the staging area and didn’t know exactly what had happened. It was shortly after that we found out that two members of our community had been seriously injured in the accident, and one passed away. The decision was made to cancel the parade, but the Pride celebration continued. As the evening went on, conflicting reports began appearing on local television. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said in a news interview that it was an attack on the LGBTQ+ community. Eventually we learned that the driver of the truck that had hit the parade attendees was actually a member of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, and that the people hit were also members of the chorus. Our community mourns this tragic accident that cast a shadow over our Pride celebration. A vigil was held here at Sunshine Cathedral last night, and many members of the community came to speak about the tragedy.
A pride flag representing the LGBTQ+ community that is the the size of a sheet of paper is the source of a standoff in an Oakland Park neighborhood. Bob Plominski and Mike Ferrari say they are facing steep fines for displaying the flag in the front yard of their home. The Eastland Cove HOA issued a citation telling them to take it down or pay. The HOA sent the violation notice on June 5th after a complaint came in. The notice said the remove the flag by June 15th or face a $50 daily fine. A member of the HOA board said this is not discrimination and they are simply following the rules, referencing a restriction on displaying flags to only American flags or military flags.
The beads, the parade, and all the Pride is back! After a year off due to the COVID crisis the Stonewall Pride Parade & Street Festival is back this weekend. The theme is, appropriately, “Out of the Darkness, Into the Light” as the LGBT community and allies come together to reconnect and celebrate. The parade returns at 7 p.m. when the temperatures drop slightly and there’s less direct sun. Leading the party will be a pair of distinguished Grand Marshals. Dr. Requel Lopes is the executive director of the World AIDS Museum in Fort Lauderdale. Joining her is NBC6 Meteorologist Steve MacLaughlin. Make sure to pick up this week’s SFGN on stands Thursday for the full story!
This Saturday, June 19th, is the Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival. It’s also Juneteenth, the day the last of the Slaves in the US were freed. Join HotSpots, WeMeg, and HappeningOut Television Network as we celebrate both Pride and Juneteenth with a special flash mob celebrating both. Featuring music relevant to the LGBTQ+ community and created by Black artists, the flash mob will take place in front of the Black Excellence Stage.
