(Watch) Racial and anti-LGBTQ bias persists in ridesharing services even though companies have taken steps to reduce it, according to a new study from Indiana University Bloomington’s Kelley School of Business. They did this by manipulating user data that the driver would see by using traditionally black or white perceived names and to show support for the LGBTQ community they simply overlaid a rainbow filter on top of a photo, a hallmark of support online. The study found that those filters made it more than twice as likely to have a ride canceled compared to that of a Caucasian profile with no LGBTQ markers. It has been suggested that this data be integrated into these services and drivers face punishment for showing such a bias.
